The Hreod Burna river corridor is a strategically important green space in urban Swindon. It functions as both an area for local use of open space and as a green corridor leading from the town centre, providing a green link to the wider countryside. The Great Western Community Forest team has been working with partners including Wiltshire Wildlife Trust, Swindon Borough Council, the Environment Agency and Thames Water to develop a plan for environmental improvements along the corridor. This has included extensive consultation with local residents and interest groups in setting priorities for action. Funding from Swindon based AFL Telecommunications Europe Limited, has enabled us to carry out a number of activities to support the plan which have included community tree planting days, ongoing woodland management, clear up days, leaflet production and site signage. The support of the local communities has also helped to shape this project and the Rodbourne Green Residents Association has been particularly keen to support the Moredon Tree Collection activity which has been another aspect of the overall project. Future work in the area will concentrate on reinforcing and expanding links with the local community. This will include forging links between established groups, currently working in isolation, through further environmental improvements. |
